Like all golf courses of the Melbourne sand-belt, Sandringham traverses a site of gentle contours.
Par for the layout is 70. At 5646 metres from the championship tees for men, the course does not appear as long as many more recently constructed layouts, but in the case of Sandringham the more pleasant challenge lies in its variety of shot-making, bunkering, small greens and clever design.
Almost everyone agrees the front nine is a little easier, allowing golfers to become settled whilst the back nine offers the greatest challenge.
Many of Melbourne's leading amateur golfers, professionals, male and female have been drawn to Sandringham in their early years by its real sand-belt golf features, by its accessibility and affordability. It has always been a great environment for junior golfers.
For seniors it is an enjoyable layout that will not wear you out - if your drives are not going as far as they once did.
An easy walking course for most golfers, now with a small number of golf carts available for hire as well as motorised, walk beside golf buggies and pull carts can assist in managing the exertion.
